A monochrome world on Deception Island

Deception Island is a volcanic island belonging to the South Shetland Islands. The combination of black stone, white snow and complete emptiness create a surrealistic landscape reminiscent of the moon's surface.

There is proof of volcanic activity all around the island. The last eruptions were in 1991-1992.

As the height increases between Pendulum Cove and Whalers Bay, the snow determines the shape of the landscape.

At the start of the twentieth century a whaling station operated for about twenty odd years. Today only the dilapidated buildings are still bearing witness to the activity at Whalers Bay.

The pebble beach is the territory of a couple of fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella).
